So its time i upgrade my POS duron 900 mhz to a completely new machine. Ive had my eye on the 3800 and just want to know if it is as easy to overclock it as ive been hearing on the boreds and what do you guys have the fsb ... set at.

I havent bought a new pc in maybe 7 yrs and i just want something that will last for a while and that will be able to do what i would like it to do. No more freezing and no more having to play counterstrike because im tired of that damn 800 x 600 game.

Ive had my eye on the Asus SDI that everybody is talking about for that expendable video card slot i might get in the future. Any alternatives, anything comparable also by abit or another mobo company.

And what would you guys go for on a good video card.

But mainly i want to know about the chip and if somebody can post some screenshots at what they have the fsb and so on on and with the final clock they pushed too.

Thanks guys, hopefully i posted this in the right forum, move me mods if i didn't.

Thanks guys.

Which 3800? Theres a venice and a dual core......If you play counterstrike, thats a cpu dependant game...
If thats the only game you play, you only need a 6800GS for the performance $200.
if you are talking about the 3800 single core, I would not get it, I would look into the 3200 and save yourself a hundred or so dollars..

How much money are you willing to spend on the whole system? Are you buying "everything"? (mobo, cpu, memory, vid card, etc..?)

the x2 3800 will clock to about 2.5-2.6. Which is good for multitasking, but when newer games come out (if you play them) that speed might be enough. Hope for dual core support in the games...But, if you only play CSS, then I would look into a different chip...
I just need to know how much money we are talkin about here..for everything.

i have the hard drive already which is a maxtor 250 sata and i have the cd drvie along with the floppy

everything else

mobo, cpu, ram, videocard, case, wireless kb and mouse, lcd monitor, keep it as low as possiible but im talking about 800 900 dollars for whats mentioned def below a thousand

ohh and the counterstrike thing was just a joke lol

im looking for something that will last me for a while, im not a big gamer but i want to keep up for a few more years, call of duty, quake 4 stuff like that

3800 x1 (venice) $260 vs 3800 x2 $280 (price watch) so i think the x2 would be best

do you have aim or anything so we can talk directly

I dont have any IM programs.....sorry..if I did I probably wouldn't post so much here, lol.

Ok, so 8-900 US dollars. Something that will last for years....I'm going to recommend a new model of memory in this setup...I have seen it do good things and since you are on a budget, it will save you $50.....here's the list. Try to buy everything at Newegg or if you have another website with better deals..

6800GS $200
GSkill 2x1GB $147
DFI LP SLI-D $159
Tagan 480w PSU $90
X2 3800 2.0ghz $300

Total before tax+shipping = $900

To save $100, I would consider a single core 3700+ sandiego..
This would actually be a pretty kick butt system for that price....I chose SLI because it gives you the option a year or so from now if you want to add another video card if you want more performance...

What about the overclock itself on the dual and single. Is the FSB locked on unlocked on those board, will i have to draw any traces to unlock it.

The cpu multiplier is locked, but all of these chips are...
The FSB on the board can easily go over 300....
Your decision now is to go with dual or single, I would go single and overclock the crap out of it. The only reason to go dual is if you do alot of intense multitasking...and going single will save you some cash...
You could also go with a cheaper motherboard if you dont think in the future that you'll want to add another 6800GS in SLI.
The X2 3800 will probably OC to 2.5-2.6. The SanDiego, will OC to probably 2.8-2.9...some people have it higher..

The multi is unlocked but only downward, so you could do say 10x260 for 2.6ghz like I do now on my 3800+ x2, or if your ram can push it you could do 289x9 for 2.6ghz and run the ram at 289 (or ddr578). The x2 at 2.6 is still screeming fast, and the ability to be in an intensive game and alt+tab to the desktop and open other programs and adjust things, save and close those apps and go straight back to the game and never be able to tell more than one thing was running at a time is simply priceless in my opinion.

id go for the 3700+ or the opteron 148, it overclocks the same if not better than the 3800 if my information is right, plus its cheaper. It also has more l2 cache than the 3800.
