my CPU temps according to my BIOS are 55+ Celcius right after I shut down. It is a 3200+ AMD64 with stock cooling. It was like that with the heating pad that comes on the stock heatsink and with Artic Silver. Did I just get a bum CPU? Any help would be appreciated.

You can't always trust the BIOS. Mine are consistantly wrong (i.e. sayign that my CPU is 39 when it's really 29). I think mine are 10C off. Download some software and get a reading from within Windows. Then tell us your temps.

I don't think it's a lot, but it depends. What are the temps in idle/full load? As long as the idle temp stays around 40° and under full load between 55°-60° you should be OK. At those temps no OCing thow...

I think that this processor should be around ~50C full load and certainly not just when you turn it off.

What are your full load temperatures.

Download Prime95 and run it. What are your temps after an hour of Prime95?

no that is the temp at idle load after sitting in the BIOS screen for 10 minutes. Full load I'm not sure but i'm scared because when I play HL2 and CS:S i get HUGE FPS drops from 75 or so down to 10-15 and I can only imagine it is because of this.

But, what software do you guys recommend for running temp. tests?

Speed Fan is a good program. I have found that Everest home is the most accurate, it also tells you pretty much anything you need to know about your computer. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
