Remove the IHS

pros:
better temps
faster
easier
less likely to bend a pin

cons:
people THINK it's risky (it really isn't as long as it's not epoxied on)
You have to modify the heatsink bracket if it's the stock-style mounting...

There you have it...

Those two cons are probably why I won't do it though.

I wonder if they plan on doing this to all of their new chips in the future...

people THINK. Key word was think. it's not actually dangerous...all the 939 CPUs are fine.

second point...modifiying the bracket...

If you get an aftermarket cpu fan it's usually a scrwe on type and is not required..
for stock style though...all you do is use sandpaper and sand down the 4 little TINY pegs on the back...it's REALLY REALLY easy.

Trust me. it's not as hard as you think. I thought it would be hard to..then I laughed when I got it finished...

I'm sure it's not hard, and I'm sure I will do it eventually

It's not about the IHS, it's about working with the bracket. I really despise working on it, as I have broke more than one (bad luck?) by simply putting on a new HSF. Stupid clipon stuff... when will they bring out the velcro?

Sounds like my CNPS9500 won't crack my die right? I'm really tempted to do this weekend since I'm doing a major overhaul on my system and I might as well get it over with. I got an Manchester X2 3800+ though. Think I can pop the IHS off?

*EDIT* Planning on buying the Swiftech Apex Ultra Water Cooling Kit. will that CPU block crack my die?

ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

You could always try measuring stuff with a ruler I really wouldn't know, but just be careful when you are mounting anything on it, and I believe it would make sense to be level with it: meaning, hold it level while you are mounting it.

No it's easier to mount a WB than a HSF on one..Just be sure to tighten it down evenly and you should be OK....The only bad thing is you really need to use a WB like the Swifty Storm instead of the Apogee...The Storm's inlet is directly over the center of the cpu die, while the Apogee's inlet is on the side....I guess the Apogee would still work but it would not cool as well....The Storm block is also very restrictive and is usually used in a single block system...

It's REALLY tempting since AMD puts that crap thermal grease on the IHS and its probably killing my temps=killing my OC and I REALLY wanna see if I can get 3Ghz out of my chip. Any videos on where I can see this popping off done? Also, how can I tell if its soldered on?
