well im making a budget pc for a friend of mine and ive got the parts sorted out for him.....hes not into overclocking or anything...just wants a decent pc that will be fast enough for him to manage his music and stuff...so a basic budget pc....well i decided on these parts (btw hes got a case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, hard drive and optical drives):

what ive decided on:
Athlon 64 3200 - £110
Geil Value ram 1gb - £61
Qtec 650 watt psu - £23

ok now what i need is a skt 939 MB..max price around £50-£60
but the main thing is the size..it needs to be small as possible because his case in not very big....i think micro atx or something, sorry im a noob on cases and stuff

also im ordering from overclockers.co.uk...so if theve got something, that would really be easier..thanks

I don't see too many mATX boards on Overclockers.UK ... at first glance, only ASUS has a few (ASUS is good brand though). One example:

Asus A8N-VM CSM Micro ATX (Socket 939) PCI Express Motherboard (MB-119-AS) £58.69 including VAT

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...ocket_939.html

There is another one right above it..slightly cheaper.

Let us know which case he has... maybe we can help better then

like i said hes not going to overclock at all..so a normal psu to just power the pc up and run it is all that needed...thanks anyway

Some additional comments:

- If the case is mATX, a standard ATX PSU might not fit! Also if he has a Dell/HP/Sony case, the PSU is likely proprietary, and standard ATX won't fit.
- Thus, maybe he should get a new case. Example: Enermax CS-527 £35.19 (incl. VAT). http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...max_Cases.html

However, maybe you could give us a budget, so we can give other suggestions?

Will your friend be satisfied with onboard video (ugh.. the words alone )? Or do you want to ad a cheap PCI-E card? The ASUS I suggested does have onboard.

Based on all parts discussed, there is still room in the budget:
Case: £35.19
MoBo: £58.69
CPU: £110
RAM: £61
PSU: £23

Total £288 + shipping.

RAM and / or PSU would be my bets to upgrade. I know you stated you don't need a heavy PSU, but you do need a quality one. Even if you don't overclock, a crappy PSU can give trouble.

yea he'd be ok with onboard video, like i said he only needs a faster pc to manage his music and stuff....so that ok....but yea you have got a point about the psu....i guess ill just get him the same psu as mine..its only £20 more and it is really reliable...thanks for all you help people...i think this system should be fine for him...thanks again

oh one last thing...does anyone know the lenght and width of any of the three asus micro atx motherboards? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...ocket_939.html

mATX is a standard, and the boards are 9.6 x 9.6 inches.

Personally, I would spend the little extra money, and go for the A8N-VM. It seems to have the better onboard video chip (nVidia GeForce 6 v. S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro IGP)

Go here and drill down to get a side by side comparison of the 3 boards. Select the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 chipset, add the board that shows, then select the VIA K8T890, add the board, and finally the VIA K8M800, and add. You get stats of all three boards.

Link: http://usa.asus.com/products_compare.aspx

The A8N-VM blows the others away in features and performance
