Well the title is a little decieving...the rig isnt for me its for a friend. He asked me to build his new system from scratch after seeing my intel rig.

Now I told him if he wants it purely for gaming...he's gonna want AMD, as much as I choked on the words. Anywho, I wont be building this for at least 2months, so I am taking into account emerging technology that will hit stores in the next coming months. I heard that AMD is coming out with the FX-6x something and a 5200+ (or something close) dual core.

So when you recommend these parts, tell me why, dont just suggest an item and leave. I am an expert builder so dont worry about tricky BIOS's (my MSI gave me a run for my money but I got it now!)

1) My computer knowledge level: Expert

2) I will use this computer for: Ultimate Gaming

3)
-CPU: FX-57
-Motherboard: DFI Lanparty 939 sli
-RAM: OCZ 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 600 (PC 4800)
-Video Card: 7800 gtx 512, duh
-Hard Drives: dual raptors in raid 0, with 400 gb backup+media
How many you want: 3
-Optical Drives: that plextor one lol
How many you want: 2
-PSU: SILVERSTONE ZEUS SST-ST65ZF ATX12V 650W
-Case: thermaltake Shark Full tower
-Operating System: XP
-Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech g7
-Monitor: dont worry bout it
-Speakers: taken care of
-Aftermarket CPU Cooling*: umm i got a koolance aquian but prob not the best for this application, you tell me, MUST BE WATER OR BETTER, not phase
-Floppy*: are these things still around???
-Sound Card*: Creative x-fi

4) Prefered budget to stay within: 3000
5) The absolute max I am willing to spend is: 3500

p.s. I could get the pc power and cooling 850 but do I really need that? I think no. Not like it is a power hungry 3.7 EE, its an AMD, right?

Is the fx-57 better than the 4800+ for gaming? i didnt think so, but I am Intel so...yeah.
Remember to take into effect anything coming out soon

NO ATI CRAP lol but seriously none

Thank you in advance

oh and btw, I will overclock this for him but now much, becuase he isnt as into it as....well anybody here so when I finish oc'ing it I am gonna leave it at that for him. The rest of the component must be user friendly to maintain. I mean that I dont care how hard it is to set-up just when its finally up and running, its gotta be stable.

Hmmmm....I wouldn't recommend the AN8 at all.

I had the single PCIe AN8, and although when it was working, it was working great, it was very speratic when it did decide it wanted to be a good boy. I HIGHLY recommend this LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR that I'm using now, VERY VERY nice motherboard.

Other than IMO, it wil be a nice rig.

BTW, Theres nothing wrong at all with gaming with an Intel. The difference is only noticeable in benchmarks

If its an SLI rig, go with the Asus A8N32 SLI. Its the fastest SLI board out there and the Tom's Hardware benches also state that its 7% faster with single GPU as well.

Floppy will be needed if you do raid to load drivers. I have a mitsumi floppy/card reader combo drive thats pretty decent as once you load the raid drivers, you will at least have card reading. For optical I'd go with the NEC or Pioneer (the nec uses the pioneer head). In benches, they are faster than the plextor (hard to believe eh? I have a plextor px712 in an older pc and I've always believed that plextor was king but apparently not). For cpu, the FX-57 is faster than the dual core 4800+ and there aren't any games that benefit from dual core technology. Of course for multi-taking the dual core offers more flexibility (say you are playing a game and ripping a dvd) but for sheer speed and oc capabilities the fx is king. I prefer the thermaltake armor to the shark from an airflow perspective (especially if using watercooling).

RAM and watercooling should be left to other experts on this site.

alright thanks a lot Krunk and Robilar, I will look at those two mobo's now.

so that new fx-62 (or wutever) is gonna be better than the new dual cores (in theory) for gaming? or might just get the fx-57 if the new ones arent out in time..
as for the ram and water cooling...any takers?

Well see, dual core WILL be very effective in the future when programs start to be threaded for it. Although I'm not so sure why people say their not good for gaming, look at the benchmark thread and you'll see some of the high hitters are dual cores

Regarding RAM I would recommend the OCZ 2GB DDR400 DUAL CHANNEL PLATINUM. It has stock timings of 2-3-2-5 and overclokable if you want to.

Regarding the CPU's I personally love Opterons, I'd go for the best one you could afford, and they are a dream to overclock. Check out this thread for some speeds these guys are getting http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/show...296#post321296
