Hey guys! In anticipation of my new case in the mail, I've decided to try out an interesting case mod. What I am hoping to do is cut away the top of this old CD drive so that the entire inside can be seen working when in use. I've already got the drive apart and I am tempted to plug it in while it's apart but this warning is bothering me. "CAUTION: INVISIBLE LASER RADIATION WHEN OPEN!" So is this something I should be worried about? I'll take pictures of the drive so you can see what I'm working with. And this last picture is from a review site so you can get an idea of the placement for the drive.

I think they emmit Alpha and Beta particals like smoke dectectors use...Though it would have to be on for the laser to be on correct? So i think your good to operate. Also, another cool, well documented mod is with HD's and makeing them see through.

Well, it would be on if I plugged it in. Actually I already did. All that really happened was the spindle spun way faster than the disc which was bouncing up and down on it for about 2 seconds. Then it made some clicking noises and stopped. I assume it needs the weight of the top device that lands on the cd to hold it down and get it up to speed. I've got almost all of the outline drawn on the cover in pencil but I need to made a curve around the spindle which requires more supplies so I will come back to this sunday and let you know how it went/works/exploded.

Well it didn't explode It's not finished yet (need to put the plastic window in) but it works. I took a video, and if you are wondering what the scratching noise is, I don't know either but it made that before I did this and it still works fine.

Sweet work. That would be useful for a case with a window in the top.

I may be still learning, but then again, who isn't?

In the top of the CD drive there is a magnet weight thing. If you get that out and set it on top of the cd it will stop it from spinning out. Dont worry about the radiation thing, it just means dont let the laser shine in your eyeballs because it will burn out your retnas. You should be able to see the laser as its red.
