6800gt... has SM3.0 and will play games better aswell as being more future proof. im sure you can OC the 6800gt pretty damn far too!

well in brute force the x850xt will hand the 6800 its ass. And if your playing older games (no need for SM3) the x850 is def a better choice. Even for the games now SM3 is like used sparingly in a few games.

Agree with that. If most games you play are pre-SM3 then a x850 is the way to go. I say go with the 850 even if you play newer games since it will give you more raw power, but if you insist on using SM3 then get the 6800. Better yet, get something like a 7600gt which I believe is on par (maybe a little slower) with the 850 and has SM3 too.

what is this sm3? what dose it do? is it used in old games?

SM3 is Shader Model version 3

Only the very latest (3D Mostly) games utilize SM3

6800 series doesnt really have enough power to be future proof., neither does for that matter. either will work and if all you want is 2001 games then get the cheaper of the two.
