Hi,

My OS drive has had some pending sectors for some time now (about 1½ years). Otherwise it has worked just fine. I ran Samsung's ESTOOL last night, and the pending sectors increased by 2 (it's now 21).

After I booted back to Windows, it started giving errors on the lower right corner of the screen. One of them says "The file or directory this and this is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." Another one said something about corrupted ntfs file system.

Do you think running checkdisk is a good idea? Do you think I can still trust this drive enough to keep running the OS from it? Almost all my important data is on this drive, although most of it has been backed up.

If all your important data is backed up and you have a warrantee remaining i would get a rma. Your drive may be ok today but who know's tomorrow it may be dead.

IF IT'S BROKE, FIX IT! IF IT'S NOT BROKE FIX IT SOME MORE!!!!!thumb.gif

Not looking good at this point. Every now and then when I try to save a file, it refuses to save, stating that I don't have the privileges or the file is currently in use. Also, a file that I deleted earlier today has now reappeared as an empty, inaccessible file that cannot be deleted. Maybe these could be caused by a corrupt file system? I'll run checkdisk later and see if it does any good.

HD Tune quick test finds no errors. The warranty expired a few months ago.

If the disk is under warranty, then rma, that disk is on its way out.

I would return the drive, but first, just to make sure, boot into the windows recovery CD and from the CMD prompt, run chkdsk /r

It's time to replace the drive either through RMA or buying a new one especially if you value your data.

After running chkdsk, the error messages seem to have disappeared, and no problems so far.

Nice, glad to hear it. If they return I'd either reinstall the OS (if you haven't) or just RMA the drive. Hopefully they don't though, CHKDSK always works for me smile.gif.
