To render any data on the drive unusable, all you need to do is overwrite it.

To brick the drive without causing any noticeable damage, interrupt a firmware flash, or short out the drive.

Microwave should do the trick. Or an MRI machine / extremely powerful electromagnet like they have at scrap metal yards.

That or, unscrew it's case and pull out a few wires.
