Yep I would think it will beat the i7-2600k in folding, probably rendering too.
However for encoding quick sync still makes a lot more sense.
Given the type of place this is, a product that does well at "rendering and servers" being marketed as a desktop cpu probably doesn't make a lot of sense to the vast majority of people here.
Now obviously that isn't everyone, it is still a valid point. Just like your point was valid. You can't take anything away from either camps perspective.
The problem is it took a long time to go for 1 - 2 threaded apps, and even longer to go from 2-4 threaded apps. How long is it going to take for an eight core cpu to matter in most everyday tasks?
In raw power the eight core bulldozer chip is going to trump the i5-2500k, the problem is finding programs that can even use 50% of that raw power.
My last thought on this subject because it's pointless and will never end is that while the i7-2600k doesn't blow the i5-2500k away in multithreading, it doesn't lose 50% of its performance when reduced to a quad core either.
I'm sure no matter how good or bad Bulldozer does there will be the exact same argument next month, and the month after that, or whichever month it happens to be that bulldozer actually releases. That argument will continue on for years upon years, as it has since AMD began to contend with Intel. And just like with all those long dead, slow and crappy cpus, these two product lines won't mean anything in a few years.
