Don't see the point in this when cable companies aren't even broadcasting in native 1080p.

It will get there, but it takes time.
Remember that it is still a 8.3MP monitor, while 1080p barely breaks 2MP ..for the kind of hardware will be needed to drive such resolutions to become mainstream and start driving prices down with it, a lot of time is needed.
+ no available movie content @ those resolutions, i.e. it caters for a very specialized market - and it is not gaming.
12 years? Lol nope try 4-5 years.

One would just have to think when setting visual settings and not just push the sliders to ultra without looking what these do - for example, at such ppi the x16 AA which is usually applied by "ultra" settings is pointless.
For example, a Source engine (relatively old as it is) gives me ~158 fps with max gfx settings at 5400x1920
Metro 2033 runs at medium settings in DX 11 mode at approx 35 fps
Crysis I have not measured at 5400x1920 (the bench does not want to run at that reso although game itself runs fine) runs smooth with high settings
and these numbers are with a single Club3D 7870 Eyefinity 6 card at stock settings.

If there is one person on this forum that knows the capability and limits of a 4x 7970 setup on extremely demanding Eyefinity display setups, it is I. Eyefinity in no shape or form would be practical with these displays and current GPU technology. And no, I don't consider playing "Source" games from an eight year old game engine on a 20,000+ dollar computer (3x this display and 4x 7970 computer) as practical.

I would consider playing any game one finds fun as "practical" if you can call any kind of gaming on a 20 000$ rig as practical. As far as running 3+ screen eyefinity and crossfire combos you are not alone in this experience. Before I switched to the present 7870 I was running 6770 + 5770 crossfire driving the same 5 screen eyefinity setup as I have currently so I would consider myself with some experience in this regard - particularly how eyefinity and crossfire combination performance degrades if you are doing so with "inadequate" resources and this combo was obviously blatantly inadequate for such resolution. The 7870 I have is not particularly powerful card either for such resolution.

What I'm saying is that with applying some thought when picking the visual settings for a game one can run such resolution with acceptable framerate and visual quality. If for you the "acceptable" is 120 fps with x16 AA then indeed - for me the "acceptable" is somewhere around 40 fps with lowest fps drop to around 30 fps and I dont need any AA. Perhaps my issue is that I have no interest in BF3 and as such dont know how this game behaves on such resolution. I'm more of Team Fortress 2 or Planetside 2 or Tribes:Acend kind of guy.

But isn't that $20K, not $5.5K?

I honestly don't understand why there's no support for eight way GPUs. More money in their pockets, right?

It takes a lot of time to get those drivers working, and to keep them up. How many people do you see around here with 4 GPU even? I can say even on this enthusiast website, it is pretty rare. There really isn't money in it.

It sounds like 4 way tends to have enough problems... 8 way would probably give you the performance of 3 way lachen.gif
