Has anyone actually tested this out? RX 480 and older cards with the new drivers? The Hexus review does not make it clear if they redid with new drivers.

Actually, they make it perfectly clear that the 480 Nitro was the only card tested with the new drivers. That's why it beat the reference 480 by such a margin. And no, I haven't seen anyone else test the older cards either.

Yeah, probably all GCN GPUs get some boost, just weren't tested with the new patch.

Something to note, AMD's patchnotes at least, only highlight some cards, I remember there was one driver update that they touted I think a 300 series performance boost, and it applied to 200 series as well. The thing that made it interesting was people complaining about not getting the performance increases on 200 series cards, reading off the notes. On that, who knows when the Nvidia cards were tested, are they using current drivers for that as well? Did they test them recently at all? I know its difficult to test things over and over, but I do feel when driver updates are released, its absolutely important to retest all cards to ensure the baseline is true.

Hard to say what went on behind the scenes. Nvidia does have a lot of cash on hand so it makes you wonder.

Edit: and no, it wasn't gimping when Nvidia optimized Maxwell, and it isn't gimping when AMD optimizes Polaris, but if this Polaris-only stuff continues I'll be very interested in how the narrative unfolds.

2 different camps on that subject though.
I dont believe Nvidia gimped there previous series, they just didnt optimise them after a curtain point while AMD did and because of that it looks like gimping but it really wasnt IMO.
Example: 290x now leading over 780ti is not because Nvidia gimped but because AMD kept improving and Nvidia didnt.

3rd PC >>> FX-6300 @ 4,5ghz - 8GB 1866mhz - GTX960
4th PC >>> Dual Core E5700 - 2GB 800mhz - HD6670
5th PC >>> AMD AM1 5350 - 4GB DDR3 - 3,1TB storage

Wonder if AMD is preparing re branded Furys as RX 490 4k... I do not belive. But in 14 nm higher cloaked, it could beat Pascal in DX 12.

I do not believe this is happening anyway. But in my opinion it should.
