Up to Haswell yes. Skylake is faster because of DDR4.

So assuming both were running identical ram, Skylake is really just a shrink? Clock for clock, there is no difference? I always heard and read it was minimal but none of the tests I found had the same ram speed and timings obviously.

I think it's time for Intel to go back to the drawing board and rethink their architecture. We've had this mess for 5+ years now. AMD is about to release a brand new architecture, and if Intel doesn't figure out how to increase performance, maybe AMD will.

Intel would be glad if you all could share ways to improve performance that their multi billion R&D program simply missed.

Improving performance isn't the hardest part, improving it while improving efficiency is. Intel likely has an improved arch ready to go within a year or so if need be I bet with their budget.

Well for DDR3 you can only go ~ 2400MHz while DDR4 will usually get you 3200MHz. It will be faster in general as speed always better to have then timings.

The problem isn't Intel or AMD but traditional silicon. According to Intel's Co-founder (also Co-CEO) the problem is that we simply can't keep scaling with current silicone, a new substrate is needed and everyone is looking for it. So, until then we're stuck with this.

For now with the information we have, Cannonlake is a tick so yeah just a die shrink.

I have a sandybridge so a tock which in my opinion is better than a tick because they optimize the process but hey I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.

My rig is still going strong and I think cannonlake 10nm will make a good upgrade.

I refuse to buy another 4C/8T CPU. That's so 2009.

Agreed. I've been on 8 thread cpu's since 2011... need a proper upgrade. 8c16t is really where I am aiming at this point.
