We said we would test the GX2 again once we obtained some updated drivers, and that’s exactly what we’re about to do right now. From a hotmail account this morning, we received the 174.51 drivers. The difference between these drivers and the last batch of 174 drivers we tried is that these ones actually installed!

Word is that the new drivers fix the profile issues that were present in the 173.67 release. While some people say SLI just wasn’t working in the first driver we tested, the issues seem more related to profiles.

Let’s see if there’s anything to it this time around.

Test System Setup

Processor(s): Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3GHz (333MHz x 9)
Cooling: Corsair Nautilus500 (Supplied by Corsair) with Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound (Supplied by Arctic Cooling)
Motherboard(s): GIGABYTE X48-DQ6 (Supplied by GIGABYTE)
Memory: 2 X 1GB Kingston PC6400 DDR-2 3-3-3-10 (KHX6400D2ULK2/2G) (Supplied by Kingston)
Hard Disk(s): Seagate 250GB 7200RPM SATA-2 7200.10 (Supplied by Seagate)
Operating System: Windows Vista SP1
Drivers: Forceware Beta 173.67

I have a feeling nvidia will give the 9 series better drivers just to make them seem better than they really are. I mean where is the 'official' 17x.xx for the 8 series?

That 1920x1200 score is pretty impressive though, but 2x 8800GTX is still faster. A single 9 series card should be atleast 2x faster than a 8 series. =/

Well the 8800 Ultra is phased out, the GTX will soon follow. And then the rest of the 8xxx series line up will dissapear. Nvidia just won't bother with them anymore.

ATI can't take over until they start making cards that yield more performance than nvidia's, which I doubt will be happening any time soon. The best single gpu nvidia card is still better than the best single gpu ATI card Ultra, GTS 512, GTX, GT, 98GTX > 3870 So nvidia has five cards that are better than ATI's best, and the GX2 is better than their X2.

But can it run Crysis?

You guys also need to remember that the 9800GX2 is a builtin SLI card and SLI doesn't work with all games. Some games require you to disable it as well. The 8800GT would likely be equal or better than the 9800GX2 when that happens.

You would still need 2x 9800GX2 (Quad SLI) to beat 2x 88800GT/GTX/Ultras. 1 9800GX2 is still quite a bit slower.

However... in HL2 it seems the 9800GX2 just completely owns everything.

Is it $700 worth of promising?

I'll spend the money if I think it's worth it, but jeez I only paid $439 for my X2.
