I honestly unable to comprehend what you mean by this. You kids with your incomplete college educations must be speaking a language way above my unschooled head!

But it's not. Saying it eventually becomes heat (when something absorbs light, for example) is not the same thing as saying a heater is 100% efficient at producing heat from electricity via the system itself.
1. you were speaking of heated metal. that doesnt have anything to do with the conversion from electricity to heat, just where the heat goes, and the fact you mixed that into the discussion.. well, doesnt support your logic.
2. for the final time, yes, heating is 100% efficient. take a waterboiler for example. you put in electricity. you get heat from it. nothing else. and since no energy is created from or lost to nothing, that means all electric energy became thermal energy. it's that easy.

lol.

we all know the (first) laws of thermodynamics. Welcome to physics 101. Depending on the boundaries of one's system one can make all sorts of misleading claims (not singling you out, though).

let's just talk about the topic at hand. 5870x2 wont use 400W. Its not gonna throw 400W of anything into your computer, the end.

the 400 is just a figure, if the card uses 300W then 300W will come out.

the boundaries are simple. anything on the PCB. not counting the cooler.

Except in the case of an endothermic reaction, their is no such thing as lost energy. Cheifscape is right, if the card uses 300w, then very close to 300 watts worth of heat will be emitted. It isn't being converted to light or another type of energy in this case.

True, this has gotten completely off topic... Oh well! I wonder, are they talking about the entire GPU itself, IE is the fan or WC setup included in this hypothetical?

It should be, since your proposed radiative heater would kill itself really fast otherwise.

BTW, this discussion has been awesome.

and i bet thats exactly where they got this "news" from. they probably just doubled the TDP of the 5870 and said "hey, thats what the 5870X2 does".

i dunno, things like this i dont listen to. not when the card isnt even sposed to be out for another 3 months. 3 months ago, we wouldnt listen to anything Fud said about the 5870 would we, so no reason to believe this.

Wait, we can't stop here. This is bat country...

I'm tired of all these "news" articles I just want to see the damn cards out in the wild.
