I actually am considering that card.. But I had never heard that about 7.1. Why are movies going away from 7.1?

Because 7.1 never really caught on and everyone is still using 5.1. In practice, the 2 extra channels were simply mirrors of the rears but played out of phase, so technically they aren't discrete signals.
