990x for more multi threaded tasks, but thats not to say the 2600k is bad either.

Actually a xeon cpu is top dog overall.Xeon w3690.The 995x (3.6ghz.)is a close second.

What is intell? rolleyes.gif EDIT: ^ ninja.gif

Pre-clock is 995x, but 2600k would spank it overclocked in a lot of applications.

Did someone think Xeon here? Are you asking for standard PC's only or servers too?

I'm still here.

Excuse me???

Wanna run that 2500k/2600k against my 990x at stock speeds and do some rendering...

***SPOILER ALERT***

You will lose...Oh and guess what....I can game on it just as well...OMG...No kidding!!!

The best would depend on what you are planning to do, if you plan to overclock. As a lot of decisions can be made off those few things there.

Simple, he asked for the fastest processor. The 2600k and 990x are both "the fastest" for different applications. It's completely understandable that both were mentioned in this thread.

The 995x hasn't been released yet...Can't really say that yet...

I have a 980x and a 2600k side-by-side and the the 980x spanks it in any multithread tasks.

Place the ignorant tag upon yourself for making such a statement! Not everyone has the same needs and desires as yourself. No offense intended at all, just stating the obvious! biggrin.gif

Observe Iceman23's Statement! This is one of intelligence!

2600K for General Uses and the 990X for Highly-Multi Threaded Applications. Depends on your work load and personal computing habits. Their both fast it just matters what you will be "using it for".

Refer to:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/142?vs=287

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-2600k-990x.html

Edit: Title should be spelled whats the fastest Intel processor.

"Don't talk like one of them. You're not! Even if you'd like to be. To them, you're just a freak, like me! They need you right now, but when they don't, they'll cast you out, like a leper! You see, their morals, their code, it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. When the chips are down, these... these civilized people, they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve."

Isn't this the guy that got a 950 just as SB came out?

Anyways, performance is relative. In gaming, 1-8 core/threaded apps I'd take a i5-2500k or i7-2600k.

In highly multi-threaded tasks it would depend on what you're willing to do for cooling. On water I'd take a 990x, on air I'd go for the i7-2600k again.

If price performance is an issue, I'd probably build several i5-2500k/i7-2600k systems to do the work together instead of trying to put all my eggs into one basket.

Unless a 990x gets 40 points or more in Cinebench, its not cost effective.

For the same price as a high end 990x system you could build several lower end SB systems and get a much higher cost > output ratio.
