Your friend will be fine. Just do a fresh format and OS install to get the pc back to speed.
Expect low settings to get smooth fps.

The celeron D is a singlecore cpu with hyperthreading. Much like the Pentium IV
The cpu would be his biggest bottleneck.

Try running Starcraft II on his pc, it will give you an idea on how Diablo III will run
