thinking about picking up a 6800k as an up/side grade from my 4930k.... I want to use NVME as well as my 4930k has been degrading recently. long story short willthe 28 lanes on the 6800k be an issue for 2 way SLI and full usage of an NVME SSD such as the 950 pro ( i know sli would be fine by itself) or would I be better off going with the 5930k for about 100 bucks more ( microcenter).

28 is more than enough. It'll run at 8 + 8 + 8 or 8 + 8 + 4

If you're taking rounds in the sternum, it's telling you your cover is insufficient

Yeah, as expected. Most people know that the 40 lane 6 cores are a complete waste of money as you will never ever use all of those lanes. Maybe you do if you're part of the 0.001%, in which case you're more likely to own an extreme edition processor anyway, making the 40 lane hex cores a complete rip off.

My 5820k, for instance, has 28 lanes available. However, I can't run SLI at 16x/16x, as that would be 32 PCie lanes used, but running them at 8X/8x won't impact performance. If I had 8x/8x running that means that there are 12 lanes leftover, more than enough for any M.2 SSD.

hi i have 5820k with sli and a 6x hdd raid and it is not that good. i am now looking at cpu upgrade so i have the 40 lanes.
ssd will take 4 lanes and gpu would be better at 16 x 16.
i have found some 5930k cpu for around £350.
so i am saving the money for one.
hope this helps

That "upgrade" will net you zero points worth of performance improvement.

Doesn't the 980ti/titan max out the throughput on a 8x pcie 3.0 slot?

Even if they don't, newer/faster video cards will.
