E8400 at $195 or the E8500 at $270? Is it worth $75 more? The 8500 has a 9.5 multi where as the 8400 has a 9.0 correct? How much more of an oc can I expect?

For 75 dollars i don't think your going to get that much more performance. I would definatly go with the e8400.

That's what I'm thinking. With the right setup I would expect to get in the low 4Ghz range with a E8400. For the extra cash I'd have to be able to expect at least a .5Ghz better oc in order to justify the E8500.

test your mobo if you can get 450fsb you get 450*9 = 4050mhz, bearing in mind that after 3600mhz you aint gonna see much difference.

Get the 8400 IMO

Is overclocking about getting good value for money?

Stable in both Vista + XP

Or is it about thrashing he most expensive kit there is?

E8400 as the multi is more than adequate already. It's not the same as the low multi's on the Qauds.

I'm doing an upgrade to my sig rig. A new cpu will be my first upgrade then probably a X48 mb or P45 and ddr3 performance memory. I'm not too concerned about a stable high oc with my current setup. I have though done pretty good with an oc on my E4300, 1.8 stock to a 3.0 Ghz stable 24/7 oc. I keep inching up every few weeks.
My setup is decent and my MSI mb allows for much tweaking and my ram is solid and a good oc'r too so maybe I'll be surprised.

an extra .5 multi isn really worth it.
I would save the 75$(the rest of your components are fine) or get 2GB more memory if I were you.

Ahh, I remember the days of the early Pentiums when you would pay hundereds of dollars more for a CPU with 166MHZ more speed. Don't be a sucker, go with the E8400.

I overclock like Flava Flav in a watch factory!

If it were me I'd go for the E8400, the extra .5 multiplier isn't worth $75 more imop. But if you've got tons of extra money laying around, waiting to be spent, why not go with the E8500? It is kinda sexy, and not many other people have it, it'd be fun to sit down and tweak around with it.... Good luck!
