Finally! I'm done my finals and I've saved up enough dough to jump off this 775 platform (a two core cpu to boot!). I've delayed my upgrade as long as possible. I haven't been really up to date with Ivy but I've been reading bits and peices of it's mediocre improvement over Sandy Bridge. I'm sure this section gets over 9000 threads on individual builds so I'll put a tl;dr at the bottom of this.

At one point I was just going to grab an Intel SSD, 2500K, and a Z68 board but I decided to wait for Ivy.

Things I do:

Lightroom
Photoshop
Gaming (not too hardcore, I'm keeping my GTX470 for now)
Multitask HARDCORE. I only have 4gb of ram right now and I'm always at 95+% ram usage and 100% swap usage. My CPU also likes to hover around 80 -100%.

I'm definitely going to grab 16gb of ram and most likely pick up an SSD.

My biggest question is:

TL;DR

- I need a motherboard, CPU, ram, and an SSD within the next month
- I will only overclock moderately on air (Something like a coolermatser hyper or at best, a Noctua D14 as I want a silent computer)
- I'm coming from a dual core 775
- This will hopefully last me atleast 3-4 years
- I do cpu intensive tasks once in a while such has Lightroom and Photoshop
- I live in Canada

What should I get?

Thanks thumb.gif

Totally forgot that, I was thinking:

CPU $200- $250
Mobo $120-$170
Ram $100
SSD - I'll worry about that later, I prefer reliability so I'll probably pick up an intel 520.

Shoot a couple more questions:
Are you ok with buying online; Amazon, Newegg, NCIX, TigerDirect, etc?
Are you near a mircocenter?

And if you want reliability, there also the Crucial M4s, its reliable and usually cheaper then the intels

I'm in a similar situation. Almost sure I'm going with these:
i5-3570k $212
ASUS P8Z77-V LX $139.99
Corsair Vengeance 16gb $104.99
Crucial m4 128gb $139.99

Total about $600 more or less since prices shift so much.

I live in a really hot area so I don't know if the heat issues with Ivy will be a problem.

I live in Canada so I can't buy from Amazon and microcenter. I live 10 minutes from NCIX, and maybe 20 minutes from Memory Express. The Canadian Newegg really blows, and so does the Canadian Tigerdirect frown.gif

I was looking at the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 but it costs $190 before shipping and tax on Newegg.ca.

Yes I have also considered the M4's.

Grab these:

Crucial M4 128GB SSD
Intel Z77 Motherboard Asus/Asrock/Gigabyte/ ect..
16GB G.skill 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM
CM Hyper 212 Evo

and wait until the i5 3570K (Ivybridge) is released.

I'd rather build something to be proud of. Build a system that is my own. Acquire upgrades and peripherals in my own time. Enjoy my creation as it evolves.

Actually I think I will get an SSD later. My biggest problem now is choosing between Ivy and Sandy. I believe Ivy will start selling on this coming Monday. Hopefully there will be some reviews about the TIM issue.

Core i5 2500K $209 @Memory Express
MSI Z77A-GD55 $150 AMIR @NCIX

For the RAM, people have been going crazy over the Samsung RAM.
Think its called the super talent, its has a 30nm module so runs lower voltage.
Overclocks like crazy, some got it to 2133@1.45~1.55V

Other then that, not sure where you can get 16GB or RAM for under a hundred.
