If you've got a few minutes, take a look at this build that I'll be surprising my little bro with. To give some perspective, he only surfs and plays CS and COD4 on a 32" LCD TV. Right now he's on a single core 939 rig. I'm going to reuse his Earthwatts 430 and hard drive. If it makes sense, I may just eliminate the 8600 from this list and have him save up for a 8800gt and the case he wants, Antec p18? (gun metal case).

This rig won't be overclocked as I have to do everything for his pc and he's about an hour away from me..blah blah blah.

So please share your ideas, criticisms, whatever......as long as it's under $500.

Thanks

Instead of the 8600GT, get this:

XFX PVT88SFDF4 GeForce 8800GS 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI $159

and spend the extra $10 on these:
G.SKILL 2 x 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 Model F2-6400CL4D-2GBPK. They use Promos IC but can OC to DDR2 900, the ones you have listed will struggle to OC to 840. I had the Promos running 4-3-3-7 1T at DDR2 720 (360 FSB). That being said, they are CAS 4.

FYI, you can still run a mild OC and be confident it wont crash. I built my brother a setup almost exactly like the one you listed, except I used an E6600. I was able to OC it to 3.24GHz on stock voltage and it hasnt crashed ever I ran Orthos for over 24hrs before giving it to him! Its been up for about 4 months now...

Seeing as he will likely have this build for quite some time, I appreciate the tip. I'll probably bump it up a few 100's as you suggested and keep it until I'm sure it'll stand up to his never defragging or doing general maintenance lol!

If you're going to bump it up a few 100's then get an 8800 GT.

I would highly recommend installing Diskeeper for this person then... Other than that, what power supply are you getting?

I'm not familiar with Disk keeper, I'll check it out, thanks. For the PSU, reusing his Antech Earthwatts 430.

Antec Earthwats 430 (as said in OP)

P.S. If you guys want to fund a similar system for me, as I am also on a single core 939 setup, it would be greatly appreciated

If you're not overclocking you can ditch the Freezer7. The stock cooling will work just fine.

haha.. My bad, skimmed the original post and mostly just read the stuff in the box :-P....

Diskeeper is awesome... It's really awesome though, defrags in seconds and automatically defrags in the background as needed... Their motto is "Set it and forget it" and it's seriously true, I love that program.... it isn't free unfortunately...

Good luck on your build!

There's nothing like experience! Thanks!

So here's what the little bro is going to get (it's better than my sig rig, but not for long! I'm gonna order a P5KE and Q6600 for myself at the same time.)

Gigabyte DS3L
XFX 8800GS
E6550
G.Skill 2*1GB PK's
Samsung burner

He has:
Antec EW 430
WD HDD
MX518
Generic Keyboard
32" LCD TV (Nicer TV than I have in my living room -Sony Wega 30", but I'm not home enough to justify a great TV, but tax time is approaching!)
