From all the dorms I have seen, you will have enough room for a desktop and a netbook. With a reasonably sized screen. Go with Desktop and netbook. I tried to get a gaming laptop also, I sold it in a month and got another desktop.
I know dudenell mentioned an issue with his ASUS laptop; however, ASUS laptops are highly regarded among PC laptops and pack kick ass in battery life compared to almost all other laptops in the market (I'm looking at you Dell and HP laptops with barely 2 hours of battery life).
The UL80 is a great laptop that can get upto 13 hours of battery... that is when it's sitting in idle, but for work it can still give you somewhere around a solid eight hours which is absolutely amazing. It's also really portable and can facilitate the light gaming where needed. Get this and save the rest for a decent desktop. Trust me, gaming laptops look nice in theory but they ARE NOT in practice when you have to lug around 10 pounds on campus for the entire day. You'll thank me for this advice one day.
I am definitely leaning towards the netbook and desktop idea, but anyone know of an easy way to transport a dekstop onto a plane? LOL I know that sounds ridiculous but I just built a new computer for myself a few months ago, and a buddy of mine made a suggestion that I just take that with and spend the extra money to add more RAM and an SSD to the netbook. Any ideas?
