hello. i would like to have some better ram in my rig for when i add new graphics card. right now i have 4gb (2x2gb) pc2-6400 (400mhz). mb will only hold 8gb. would it be worth it to buy pc2 8500 ddr2 (1066mhz) 4 gb or spend way more for 2 4gb sticks of pc2 8500.

You would more benefit from a full system rebuild then upgrading your memory.

I run 16GB now, which is kinda overkill to be honest. But for windows 7 there was a huge performance increase for me to go from 4GB to 8GB. I wouldn't run a system now with less than 8GB. If you can get to 8GB I think you will be very glad you did.

Not wanting to rebuild this system. I know everyone says that first. System has been a good overclocker and I'm thinking of doing the lga775 to lga771 modd. I like pushing old systems it's alot of fun. So for this build will I notice an improvement by going to ddr2 1066 ram or just stick with ddr2 800 ram? I have 4 gb now as I only have to memory slots. This stuff is kind of hard to find in the 2x4gb sets. I can find 2x2gb sets all day

You would see an improvement going from 4gb to 8gb, especially in gaming as less applications would be paged from the hard drive, when looking from ram make sure its a low CL and good timings as well too really get the most out of them. You would also benefit from a gpu upgrade, getting a cheap GTX 750 TI card which take very little power so you can still use the same PSU. You would see a larger increase in the GPU alone, but that plus the memory upgrade you should be fine for a while longer. Yes moving from 800 to 1066 is a small benefit, in gaming and in windows.
