buynow=fail....no its not.
IT IS fail, you have to wait only a couple weeks for the new 9 series to come and i'm sure that the 8 series will get a nice price drop.
REMEMBER! it pays to be patient.

Personally, I would go for 2 - 8800GTS-512's in SLI. I just swapped out my 7950-GX2 with just one XFX 8800GTS-512 and the difference looks like this.

Of course I had to get Vista or DX-10 would have been a waste. 3DMark06 scores show those results too.

Before:

3.4Ghz using XP + GX2 = 9867

Added GTS:

2.4Ghz XP + GTS = 12485
3.4Ghz XP + GTS = 14366

Installed Vista:

3.4Ghz Vista + GTS = 13708
3.4Ghz Vista + GTS OC = 14974

Proof:
This is with only 1 GTS OC'd a little and Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz

it's only for a goal to read 18,000 on 3Dmark06. only reading 11.5k right now =
Waiting is a waste... base your decision on what's available now, NOT speculation on future card performance.

Two 8800GTS cards would probably be your best bet.

Both my 8800 GTS died. Saving up for 2 more GTX260.

Turns out, both my 8800GTS 512 is alive, just bad memory from the OCZ reapers, causing me to remove my graphic card to boot up.

Wait for the benchmarks of the 9800's If they suck. Get something now, it will save you a lot of effort.

Go for 2x 8800 GTS 512mb - Will dominate just about any game out on the market now (dunno about crysis) but I think that would be best bet.

IF your not satisfied after youve bought these cards, you could always step up to 9800 if you WANT.

lols, the step up program seems handy, but im too lazy, i was too lazy to step up this 7950Gx2 to a 8800 GTX back then -.- I probably gonna wait, but i probably wil not get a Gx2 this time, since mines been developing many problems with games, usually uses 1 Gcard instead of 2.

To my knowledge, it's impossible to hit your goal 3DMrk06 score with a single card. ANY single card.

My 3.6 GHz Q6600 rig with a 8800GT at 725c/1100m maxes out at around 14,500.
