Hi everyone,

I will be purchasing a new video card within the upcoming weeks and I had a few questions I wanted to run by everyone and see what their opinions were. Keep in mind my current monitor is a 30" Samsung SyncMaster 305t and I will be playing Age of Conan when it releases, but it would be ideal for me to run it on the highest resolution which is 2560x1600 with as high of detail as I can.

1) From the benchmarks I've seen it's questionable whether or not the 9600gt will suffice for my needs, however what are your opinions?

2) What if I were to run an SLI configuration of the 9600gt would this give me better performance than a 9800 gx2?

3) Should I invest the money and opt for the 9800 gx2? Will the 9800 gx2 be able to sustain high level of detail and 2560x1600?

Thanks a lot for trying to help me out and I appreciate any feedback or suggestions you can give me towards the matter. I have been out of the loop with video cards for a few months now so I do not know all the best options available.

Thanks,

James

i think your getting confused between a 9800gtx and 9800gx2. A 9800gx2 is basically 2 g92 (8800gts/9800gtx) chips on 1 board.

2 9600gt's would probably be comparable to 1 9800gtx and would be cheaper.

However a 9800gx2 would kill 2 9600's because it is 2 of the faster gpus on 1 board.

Hi sonicmat,

I specifically mean the 9600gt and not the 9800gtx.

The 9600GT is a cheap mid-range card. It won't run many games at 2560x1600 at higher details. The 9800GTX would run a couple older (or lighter) games maxed, and most games at mid-high settings at that resolution. The 9800 GX2 would run all but a few games maxed.

1 GX2 can run Crysis at 30fps + maxed settings, which is all most people care about these days.

FYI, 9600GT = performance just under that of a 8800GT.

2 x 9600GT's in SLI = performs slightly better than 1 9800GTX.

I GX2 is better than all three. It is the best single card out there atm.

To see how they all perfrom in Crysis:
