i can personally vouch for the 9600GT being a very strong card
its just a 9800GT with less SPs
which makes it not as good, but depending on the game/res, it can be a negligable difference
or it can be a huge one.

heres a chart for the 2 cards

9600gt is *about* on par with a HD4670 (9600's a bit higher performer, thought not by a whole lot), which give about the same performance with the 3850. I would think the 3870 would fair better in some games until you turn on AA/AF, in which point the 9600gt would win by a wide margin. What resolutions are we talking about though? Which 3870?

Regardless, I'd sooner get the 9600gt over the 3870--newer, lower power consumption, can't go wrong with that.

They are both close, the 9600GT uses less power.
These cards may be bottlenecked with a too good of a cpu though.

Yes, the 9600GT and 3870 should be close performance-wise but I would recommend the 9600GT. Typically the 9600GT outperforms the 4670 (not by leaps and bounds though)

I would actually go for the 3870 for it's dual slot cooler. It also performs slightly better most of the time with AA/AF off/low IIRC

Of course, there are 9600GT's with a dual slot cooler as well
