Found some real-world game benchmarks:
http://www.elitebastards.com/page.php?pageid=12038
In most D3D tests, the X800 got higher max fps, but the 6600gt maintained a steadier average fps. On anything OpenGL, the X800 got creamed though.

Hmm, was that before some of the latest driver updates from ATI? They claim to have increased Open_GL performance by quite a bit.

.. The second number is with tax?

That is an INSANE tax rate!!!

*remembers not to ***** when he files out tax forms this year...*

As to cards.. Probably the nVidia. But also probably SLI.

Interesting upgrade chart

(And the perf article it came from ain't bad either.)

I'm too old to be governed by fear of dumb people.

No need for apology

The 6600GT would be the clear winner for me.

While the X800GT is a good card, the 6600GT is just the best bang for the buck.

Please keep in mind that the numbers generated in the review I linked are based on an overclocked system.

I have two 6600GT's, and I love em. They overclock like mad!

x800gt:
it has a 256 bit memory interface: the 6600GT has a 128bit interface (definetly future bottleneck)
its a 256mb, not 128mb like the 6600GT (another plausible bottleneck)
it has 6 vertex things, the 6600gt has 3
definetly the 6600 owns in price (maybe not always) but the x800gt will own in performance, especially in future games where little details like the bit interface will be a more prioritized neccecarity ;D

I've been looking at these two cards as well. It really seems like the X800 series is better, especially if you buy or unlock all 16 pipelines. But the thing that bothers me is the lack of Shader 3.0 support...
Tough decision.

CPU-Z: Coming soon

The performance differences between the cards isn't staggering, and aren't in either cards major favor. They both score very well, and it's amazing they do, as they both have very different characteristics.

As for SM3...there is no evidence that SM3 is any better than SM2, comparing screenshots (google) between the two types shows no discernible difference.

Even game designers have commented that there is currently very few games (games in production and even design phase) that are utilizing SM3 (or any part of this instruction set), and even commented further that there is nothing SM3 can do that SM2 can't do. As it currently exists, SM3 is theoretically faster than SM2, but as stated previously, the SM3 instructions are not being used in this way yet, as a performance optimization.
