I personally think, Fireworks has the edge if simplicity and images for the web are what you wish to create.

Otherwise if professional FULL photo editing, creation, manipulation and well everything is what you wish to create. GO PHOTOSHOP

Photoshop. I have found it just has more options and a better layout.

The main advatage I find that Photoshop has over GIMP is ImageReady. The program has been indespisable to me in work with webiste layouts, and it's interface for animation is second-to-none.
