What do you all think about a system such as this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z600-Workstation-2x-2-40GHz-Hex-Core-E5645-24GB-RAM-No-HDD-No-OS-/181902101532

Dual hex E5645 @ 2.4Ghz
It has a lower QPI speed vs the X56 CPUs
But I am wondering if this would even have an effect on single thread projects.
I am thinking it is a good base for a 2nd 12 core system...

That looks like a decent system for the price. I'd look at using the optimised app, you could probably get better numbers from that first before more hardware.

It looks like a decent system. I bet it performs close to my Z600 with the dual X5650's.
When looking at Z600's. This is what you have to take into account. From the 'supported components', 'Quick Specs' part of the information sheet:

"Support for Xeon 5600 Series processors requires the C2 revision of the Intel 5520 chipset. Two methods
are available to determine if a specific Z600 system has the C2 revision of the chipset. 1. Use the BIOS
setup menu to access the "Boot Block Date" from the "System Information Menu". All B3-based systems
will have a "1/30/09" date and C2-based systems will have a "01/07/10" date. "

I nearly bought one with the Quad core X5550 series CPU's. I intended on upgrading to the X56** series but didn't realize that there are two revisions of the motherboard and unless it had the 'C2' revision, I wouldn't be able to do so. As that has 56** series CPU's, you should be okay for future upgrades.
But if anyone else is looking at them - make sure you get the 'C2' revision Motherboard thumb.gif

Yay I now have the 1% badge for denis.

Crunch3r is still working on improving his app. With the next revision it looks like it's going to be a decent bit faster than the other one.(on phone can't remember his name)

Congrats on teh badge and congrats to this team thumb.gif

Got my second X5680 in the mail today. Both CPUs are running now, drawing 380W at the wall. Temperatures with the supermicro heatsinks previously mentioned are around 65-73 Celsius, gonna have to work on that a bit. The fans are super quiet, can hardly hear them running... I wonder if they are not running full speed.
Though I am sure the temps would be better if my office was not 80 Fahrenheit.

I bought a z600 system with dual E5645 as well this morning:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/381436850280

Should have it up and running within a week biggrin.gif

I tried the SSE4.1 and SSE3 on 5680's and seems the Sesef SSE3 1..5 runs best on those. Not sure any more optimizations can be done for now... seems to run pretty good! Running the Linux 64b SSE3 on another setup... seems tiny bit slower than the Windows version... some work may be done there...

Great! Those are good temps under 100% load! Seems I will have to upgrade the fans on my cheaper version... what size fans are they?
