It helps immersion to have played TW2 first and have a save to continue from, but TW3 stands on its own without it. If you played TW2 and don't have a save, you can emulate a save, and at one point you will be interrogated about your past, and you can "tell the story" of TW2 as you played it.

I haven't played through the second game yet but I did the first. I lost my game save from the first so I am going to look into d/l one then start a play through of the second witcher and then on to this one.

Ok cool, do you know what ending or people you helped in the game? I have been reading there is a whole bunch of diff. endings according to who you helped or saved. Does it really do anything diff. to the witcher 2 game?

I can say for certain that the people you help/ befriend changes the outcome, cutscenses and NPC involcement , but I'm not sure it changes the difficulty of the end sequences. Kinda neat to see how it all plays out from your earlier decisions.

It had an impact on a few dialogues, and of course your equipment carry over. In short,
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I helped Abigail in Chapter 1, helped the order in chapter 2, but ultimately stayed neutral in chapter 4. I let the werewolf live, and helped that hooker lift his curse. I let the striga live in chapter 5 and lifted the curse. I helped the humans in their struggle with the vodyanoi in chapter 4. I let Berengar live in chapter 4. I also gave Alvin to Shani in chapter 3. in the end game, I didn't let Eredin take Jaque de Aldesberg's body, and fought him.

Ask me about the other choices if I've missed any.
