Year 2015
Using modpacks

It makes more fun assembling your own modset, with minetweaker to adjust the modpack to your needs.
And what @brucethemoose said about content and servers.

Easy to get into, but you must really be sure that sandboxing is something you like.

Online play is generally good, but as in every sandbox it takes time to find the server you want to play on.

I tend to build far away from people because of this. I often find my self 20,000 blocks from spawn. Returning to spawn is always an adventure.

If I manage to have enough people on the server, I'll let them claim land a decent distance and let them use command blocks to teleport. I'll probably have a hub set up somewhere. I'm still trying to work on getting my castle set up. Since I'm going to be doing a YT LP, I'm doing something with the castle to make a story.

That's why you setup a cauldron server and have multiworld installed in order to have a separate mining world that you can reset whenever needed or on regular intervals. thumb.gif

I have Mystcraft installed, so I can just make a new dimension. I've never used Cauldron before, but I guess that is the best thing to do for vanilla servers. When I was talking about servers being mined out, I was referring to all the servers I tried out. My own servers have never had enough traffic.
Also, I might need to make it a rule to not use Digital Miners in the overworld on my server...

I'd love to do that... But I already have a forge mod that's loading 3 other worlds with custom terrain/mobs. And are far scarier than the nether/end... redface.gif

The better servers I played on had at least 1 mining world with scheduled resets. Auto-miners like quarries, digiminers, BM rituals and such were limited to these dimensions, and hand-mining was discouraged in other dimensions. You have to be careful though... Dimensions aren't threaded before 1.8, so having a bunch loaded at once can create lag.

Getting traffic with custom packs is hard, as every user has to precisely replicate the server's setup. Getting it hosted on FTB/Technic/ATL would help some.
