The tessellation in this game is phenomenal. HBAO+ is magnificent. Too bad it runs like poo on 980s.

Oh well. It will be a great replay once Big Boy Pascal hits.

Just finished this great game! Can't believe Anna ended up being a transgender. Weird stuff.... thumb.gif

Game ran fine other than some areas hitting around 45 frames at 1440p/max settings with SMAA 2x. Slight stuttering at times but wasn't a big deal. If they ever patch the game I'll be too busy with new titles coming up.

Rise of the Tomb Raider CPU Scaling with HBAO+ (Requested by sugerhell)

3930K 4.5GHz HT OFF
DDR3 2400MHz Quad
290X CFX
RSC 16.1.1.

SETTINGS

HBAO+ ON
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
TWO CORE

THREE CORE

FOUR CORE

SIX CORE

HBAO+ OFF (NO AO)
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
TWO CORE

THREE CORE

FOUR CORE

SIX CORE

Verdict: There does not seem to be any large change in FPS in this CPU dominent location with HBAO. HBAO actually increased the FPS by 1 on average.

GPU Usage, HBAO+, SIX CORE
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Take that with a pinch of salt. This usage is typical when the GPU's are limited. MSI AB also has a hard time reading usage because, well, that's GCN for you! smile.gif

How come no changes in frames when going from 4 to 6 cores? The bottleneck becomes the GPU and not the CPU? Or the game doesnt use more than 4?

The game is heavily single core threaded dependant. Adding more cores won't fix that. The game only uses 2 cores. There is an FPS boost adding the 3rd core only because it gives CFX some room for data swapping.

I am not really familiar with that. Each core has two threads, adding more cores gives additional threads so I am not really sure what you mean by that. I would imagine the game is not properly optimized and doesnt utilize the threads efficiently enough as the load is not distributed evenly across all the available threads.

Each core is not represented with 2 threads when HT is disabled.

Adding more cores won't effect performance in this game. As I said before, the game is heavily single threaded dependant. If it was multi threaded dependant, then yes, adding cores would increase FPS.

As for the load being distributed evenly across all the available threads, Task Manager always shows load on all threads even if there is no load on most of the threads. That's just how the OS reports it. You need high standard 3rd party tools to read the real usage.

I always have a hard time figuring out what settings are taxing for the CPU and which ones are taxing for the GPU.

I wish there was a site that would throroughly test AAA games with an in depth guide into the settings. Something like the Nvidia guides, but with more focus on what someone can do in case of a CPU "bottleneck".
The Nvidia guides are great and I wish AMD would do them aswell.

It's the same for every game. Distance of detail, distance of rendered shadows and physics.
