I'm eager for the 8970 release I can't wait to get rid of what I'm currently using.

Yep

Same thing with these kepler and maxwell GPUs. Nvidia promised us the moon, and then when they saw that AMD is still kind of lagging behind, they pretty much decided to save the good stuff for later.
It's the mother of all conspiracy theories.
Yeah, Intel saw BD and said "Let's redesign Ivy Bridge in 5 months, but this time, let's make it awful...." totally makes sense. Replace "Ivy Bridge" with "GK100" and you've got the same thing.

A small change in stepping would be enough to limit OC I would think.

If we all stopped speculating overclock.net would see somewhat less traffic smile.gif. As long as we know it's speculation, or a judgment.

So basically 8970 will be 15% faster than a 7970?
and 780 will also be 15% faster than a 680?

Sounds fair to me and also expected.

I believe the sales of 7xxx and 6xx GPUs from both companies are actually good and while they are good they would want to polish their products a bit and sell them again next year, instead of bringing a new technology.

This could make more money for both ATI and NVIDIA.

but yet again, we can only talk for real when we see some definite specs.

It doesn't take 5 month to replace solder with cheap TIM and bottleneck Ivy's OC Ceiling with a thermal wall.

Back on topic, if 8970 is only going to be 15% faster than 7970 Ghz then I will probably grab another 7950 on a sale to CLX instead of getting next gen. Invest the extra upgrade money into "hopefully won't be gimped by cheap TIM" Haswell and Z87 instead.

I don't hug trees, but I do drive a Prius wink.gif

I thought that the TIM thing was disproven

Like people replaced it and still got the same results (more or less)

Yeah, with IB there still was the voltage and frequency wall in IB. Unlike AMD, Intel chips do not scale with lower temps.

If someone was at the edge of a heat wall due to using less than top-of-the-line air cooling, then replacing the TIM would help.

15% is disappointing. Wonder if both AMD and Nvidia are holding back to hold off performance and boost sales??

Being realistic, it cant be more than 15-20%. Its same manufacturing process with tweaks here and there. We can expect a bit faster memory with more bandwidth and slightly higher clock with will equal to around 15%. They'll throw in more shaders, ROPs and TMUs while at it. It will all come down to price per performance increase. If they try to charge $550 for a card with 15% better performance at best then no upgrade for me. My 6970 is aging but with school and work i barely have time to game. If the price is reasonable for a 8970, i might pick one up.

Nah, you do get an improvement but the vast majority is down to IvB being so dense and 22nm leaking more at higher voltages than 32nm.
