Personally, what I need in my gaming PC is that when I come home from work, switch my PC on and start my game. Maybe browse before it and after it.

you should leave your PC on, bad to keep power cycling parts. at idle most rigs use like 2 light bulbs worth of electricity so its not like your power bill would go up much.

im sure MS will bring DX12 support to W8 after everyone's installed 10 on their machines.

I bet $100 that the most widely-used gaming API for AAA games over the next 3-4 years will be DirectX 12, not Vulcan or Mantle. Microsoft WINS!

Those are 2 big if's.
First it has to be good or better then DX12 and then you need dev support for it.
Unless this gets pushed out of the gate by almost every big publisher, this will just be a niche AP you sometimes see.

Valve will support it do that 75% of the games that people play will have Vulkan support lol. EA will support it for sure alongside DX12.

L4D/portal are both about as deep as Pac Man, especially after being released in the wake of the HL2 (trilogy?).

Portal just "decent"? I'd say that Portal is the last game to present us with a fresh and new gameplay. If Valve games take off is because they're really well done if not master works like this franchise or Half Life

Portal 1 and 2 will remain as classics and you can't say that much about today's games.

As someone pointed out before, I don't really know how you can even question Valve's popularity as game developer when they monopolize the top 3 most played games on Steam.

Why is Valve interested in API's??? Aren't they just a digital store now??

Their rhetoric is designed to service their needs as a 'digital retailer' not because of some game dev needs/desires.

I stopped considering them a serious dev years ago.

...and yeah...Portal was decent. However, I didn't consider it a spectacular game. Half Life either for that matter. They've made some good games. Now they're a Digital Retailer / Mod Maker.
