My SSD appears to be gradually filling up, but I can't figure out why.

I have a 128GB OCZ Vertex 3, which I have installed win7, MS Office, GW2, SC2. I also have an HDD which I use for storage, and all my browser downloads are directed to the HDD.

When I open the C:\ drive and select all items, (right click -> properties) it shows that the total size of all is around 65GB. However, the "My Computer" as well as Rainmeter tells me that 92GB is being used.

Can anyone please provide some insight on this? If possible, can I do anything to free up space?
I remember back when I first installed Win7, I followed some SSD guides to optimize space/performance already.

Windows 7 by default uses 25% of the drive for back-ups. I made a pretty picture to explain this before:

If not, check and see if your pagefile is enabled. System and security -> system -> advanced settings -> advanced -> performance settings -> 2nd tab in that pop-up. By default it is equal to your RAM, I believe.

turn off hibernate

right click command prompt run as admin

powercfg -h off

turn off system restore

right click computer properties, system protection click configure, tick the radio next to turn off

and lower your page file

right click computer, properties, advanced system settings, advanced tab, performance box click settings, advanced tab, change, untick automatically manage paging...,, custom size 1024 and 1024 in the white boxes.

apply restart ad recheck.

It could just be hidden files and folders within the C:\ partition
Is your Paging file on the C:\ partition too ?
Get rid of your Temporary Internet Files and other junk files.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

thanks for the tips guys.

system restore was already off
reduced pagefile cleared up ~6GB, clean temporary files cleared up ~1GB

is this a common issue?
i could have sworn i had around 79GB used a few months ago without saving/installing anything to C:\. before "clean-up" i had 92GB used, and now it's at 85GB use.

Could be a self-replicating worm, that's eating up the space. biggrin.gif Joking... or am I ?! eek.gif

Heh, no just do regular clean-ups and you should be fine.
Just remember not to defrag the drive since it's a SSD.
