It goes a little deeper. My last ex I met online, and she was afraid to tell people she was female. And I only found out because she pretty much confided in me that she was a girl. Turned out she was local and we hit it off. Then since we were dating, she used me as a safety net for the hounding of dudes on vent and in-game. Since we've broken up, she hangs out in vents as the only girl and letting everyone know she is a girl online is priority #1.

I must admit that I met my girlfriend on WoW. Oddly enough when I first met her in game she scared me to death. But over the course of almost 2 years we chatted back and forth a great deal then one night she just came out to me with how she felt. Within 1-2 months I was on a plane to Pennsylvania and I spent a week with her. We have been inseperable for almost 2 1/2 years now. I live in Arizona and work has been very slow so I havn't been able to afford to get out to see her often. But we are always on the yahoo voice chat, from when I get home from work until bedtime. We also use skype. I've been out to see her 5 or 6 times for 2-3 weeks at a time and it's been great. We are wanting to get married but for now things are on hold due to both of us failing at finances.

Yes she is a real girl. Yes she's hot (in my eyes at least). And she is the only good thing in my life.

The guy above is actually in the minority in terms of demographics for MMORPGs. The majority is actually, like with all of gaming, casual gamers. It's hardly surprising at all because WoW in it's gameplay mechanics, 'forces' you to be social and often they get comfortable with people in their guild and thus share real life stories and experiences.
I don't play WoW, and yes, it's easy to get a laugh at MMORPG's because of the stereotype but in reality, they're the minority.
A good chunk of MMORPG players are in the mid 30s, have working lives, often professionals, mothers etc...
And due to the social factor, attracts far more female players + the fact they are far less discriminated against and less intimidated vs. FPS games.

I would rep you so hard, if I could. The best post I've read this week.

Not that I am some kind of stereotype standing up for WoW, I play it for 2-5 hours per week, but as a gamer, I wish more people took this understanding on the MMORPG industry.
