I just bought a used xbox that was claimed to be in acceptable condition. I plugged everything in, turned it on, and it didn't even boot. It's just red ringed. Its like the seller made no attempt to fix or refurbish it and just sent it broken. What am I supposed to do now?

If you bought it from ebay or used paypal, then you can refund/charge-back.

Amazon. EZCorp was the seller, I figured cause I bought a perfectly fine ps3 from them that an xbox would work too.

I have 48 hours before they say whether I can return it or not, should I attempt to use any of the youtube quick strategies to fix it?

The power supply is fine, I get the green light when the box turns on. I was thinking of the one where they stop the fans to let it overheat and reset.

That isn't a real fix. Feel free to give it a shot, maybe they just forgot to reheat it. You might be risking it RR'ing again very soon, though. Then you won't be able to return it.

The only original style xbox I would touch is the jasper models.
