I hear mix reviews about these DAPs. There's a lot of "yums" but then there are reasons I keep forgetting on why exactly people are suppose to avoid them. What exactly is wrong the players again?
My experience with Hifiman is only with the HM901 and thus, I can't say much about the rest of their portfolio.
But specifically for the HM901 - here's what I found to be lacking:
1. Lousy scroll wheel, makes it a real pain to switch between different menus
2. Soundstaging is a bit overdone. It sounds artificial and horrible.
Listening to Bon Jovi with my Sennheiser CX880i, it sounds like the band has been separated into 2 distinct groups, and playing from the left and right corner of the room.
It was worse when I listened to classical music - on Brahm's Double Concerto, it sounds like the Orchestra has been divided into 2 groups??
My own audio equipment so you guys know my background:
Speakers: Focal XS Book Music System
Music Files: AIFF played by XM Play
DAC: ifi iDac powered by iUSB power supply
*My speakers are active speakers so they connect directly to the DAC*
