Hey all.

Im wondering about Microsoft server 2003 and 2008. Im just wondering are these specific server operating systems or are windows server 2003 and 2008 split into category's like vista and xp were? for example I know alot about these Operating systems but im wondering do these fall into 2003 and 2008?

-Windows Server Web Edition
-Windows Server Foundation Edition
-Small Buisness Server
-Standard Edition
-Other Editions above standard like Enterprise, Data Centre and HPC editions.

Question im trying to ask is are these packages part of 2003 or 2008? like vista was "Vista Home" , Vista Ultimate.

Server 2003 and Windows XP are both based on Windows NT Kernel 5.x. Server 2008 and Windows Vista are both based on Windows NT Kernel 6.0. Server 2008R2 and Windows 7 are both based on Windows NT Kernel 6.1. Server 2012 and Windows 8 are both based on Windows NT Kernel 6.2. Server 2012R2 and Windows 8.1 are both based on Windows NT Kernel 6.3.

There are different editions of Server, just like there are with Windows. However, there is no real comparison between Windows Server 2003 Standard and XP Home Premium. With Server 2008R2, there was Foundation, Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web Server, HPC Server, Itanium-Based Systems, just like with 2012R2 there are Foundation, Essentials, Standard, Datacenter. With Windows 8.1 there is 8.1, 8.1 Pro, 8.1 Enterprise, and 8.1 RT. Those 8.1 editions do not match up to anything with Server 2012R2 editions, except sharing the same kernel.
