I've decided ... it's time for a friggin upgrade ... been rocking this 670 for too long ... time to move forward.
TBH I had more or less decided on a 1070 (not sure which, wanting whichever one has the highest power limit) ... I really love the perf they're getting, and the lower power usage (having low TDP, so as not to heat up the room too much, is pretty dang important when you live in Arizona) and the new features ...
But then I saw the CRAZY deals on 980ti's going on. The friggin' EVGA Hybrid is $499 - 10% promo code - $30MIR ... we're talking $420 bucks here for a top o' the line (consumer line anyway) GPU that was $700 a month ago, with great cooling/low temps (although I'm sure it pumps out a good deal of heat to accomplish that feat). Then there's also the Reference Classified ($399 after $20MIR) and the Zotac AMP ($399 flat) ... man these are some AMAZING values. And from what I've seen, in nearly every case if you can hit 1500 on the 980ti it's beating out a max OC'd 1070 by at least a little bit ... in pretty much every situation.
Still gaming at 1200p but that may change to 4K in the not-to-distant future. Seems like the extra bandwidth on the 980ti would be an advantage but somehow the 1070 still keeps up even at 4K in most benchies ... anyways, this 670 isn't cutting it anymore even at this res, at least not with the newest games ... cannot STAND not being able to max everything out with some AA ...
Been drooling over the 980ti for over a year, but dang ... the 1070 is such a little beast, whilst still only sipping the juice ... And apparently has way better VR capabilities (which I may eventually care about) ... so ... what to do?
1070? Hybrid? Reference Classy? Zotac AMP? Or wait for the bigger Polaris chip just to see what it offers (the 480 is intriguing for it's better DX12/Async/Vulkan perf, but isn't fast enough overall for me). Keep in mind that for now I'll be keeping my 930 1st-gen i7 at 4.0 ... not too worried about bottlenecking since I'm just looking for a steady 60fps while gaming, with maxed settings ... not trying to break any benchmark records.
I'm at a loss ... What say you, OCN'ers?
EDIT: Also from what I've seen, 980ti 'stock' bios has some aggressive limits on voltage & power level (esp. on something like the Hybrid), are there some good 'unlocked' bioses floating around, such that I may be likely able to flash to get some volts & TDP, maybe hit 1550 or above? Also, anyone know if the Classified (with it's 14+2 power section vs. the hybrid's 8+2) has a better 'stock' bios, such that it allows for better OC's out of the box w/o flashing (i.e. higher voltage/TDP limit)?
Last question ... anyone know if the -10% off code on NE works for any other EVGA 980ti's, or is it just on the Hybrid (that's the only one currently 'advertising' the promo code ... if it works on the Classy, that might sway me that direction, always love the upgraded components).
