You could roam with your Verizon iPhone in Japan, because both Japan and Verizon have CDMA networks. Most other countries have GSM, which the Verizon iPhone doesn't support. (Europe, China, Hong Kong, etc.)
Alot of people have gotten that third party D7000 grip and say it is fine. It's made of high impact plastic instead of magnesium, but that's not necessarily bad.
Have her get Canon or Nikon, then she can probably borrow some lenses. For Canon I would recommend at least a T2i from the Canon Loyalty program. As for Nikon, I would recommend a D3000 or higher.
You can just copy the program files to a flash drives/hard drive. A lot of my friends play it off their external drives even though I try to convince them otherwise.
The Maximus IV will clock higher for sure when it comes to extreme overclocking. It has 20 VRMs. Edit: But, the OC mainly depends on the chip. Almost any 1155 mobo with atleast 8VRMs and a good chip can hit 4.8 or 5 easy.

I'm also for the D700. The build quality is great, and the AF system works. Every time, a sharp, slightly lower resolution image looks better than a possibly out of focus, noisy image. This is part of the reason the D700 doesn't need...
