I have the 5520scr intel board, and I have to activate the RAID option ROM in BIOS...
Then it should be a matter of pressing 'ctrl-m' i think...should tell you on screen
My advice would be to get your boss to get you a course, or at least some good literature om 2003 server..
'Stumbling' into AD, and Server products in general, can create a lot og downtime...
If you get paid the overtime, and don't mind...
Regarding a cheaper RAID card....My server has a 3ware 9500s (LP)
I found it to be stable & fast. It also works flawless with WD's Green drives ....
If you can live with used gear for the server, I would go the ebay route and find some...
EDIT: I will soon also have a TV server/recorder with '4 The Record' It streams live TV to my XBMC's
Will also try Hauppage's Colossus HDMI 1080i Recorder (pci-e) for recording gameplay...(BF3)

I bought one of theese 3 years ago just for playing with....
Managed to change the BIOS boot image & flashed the Intel NIC option ROM to a bootloader...
+1 on the separated HTPC/ server issue....
A server, IMO, should be just a server....keeping stability at max.....
Personally, I run XP pro as file server/+++, and I use a Acer Aspire REVO r3610 with OpenELEC XBMC on it (boots in 10 sec)
If you just want it as a file sharing server, don't change anything...
Just set up the shares you want...good to go...
