This happened to me also, but I didn't have to reinstall the drivers? All I did was Apply it (when Ultra High wasn't selectable), quit the options menu, reload it back up and I could select it. Glad you got it sorted in the end...

Definetely the 8600GTS. It has DX10 support and is on-par, if not better than the X1950 Pro
