Its probably voltage, as different tests stress different subsystems. If one does FP math, the FPU is stressed. Same goes for Int math. Not only that, but there are different pipelines for certain tasks. Memory stores and...
1.48v at 4.6 isnt too bad. With a 140mm cooler it stayed around 58c or so at 100% load. At 4.7ghz (1.52v) though... It hit something like 70c in 30-40 seconds. Oh, and once you get your OC stress test stable you can usually enable...
Bump the voltage up to ~1.5v and see if it passes. (this will require very nice air cooling to achieve.) You may also try bumping NB voltage up to 1.35 or so. If the voltage delta between core and NB got too big it caused issues on my...
FX runs fine on 970 boards. Had an FX-4100 at 5Ghz on an ASRock 970 extreme 3, 1.55v on 4+1 phase VRM. No issues what so ever. Just make sure you put a fan ON the VRM heatsink. If the VRM heats up things get... odd. Oh, on ASRock...
After the price drop the FX line is a much better buy than it was at launch. You can get an FX-8120 for 170 shipped, and a decent to good motherboard for 130 shipped... So your point is? Also the i5-2500k is not really a better...

Umm, anyone ever heard of Phase Change cooling? You could definitely run 1.7v for 24/7 if you so wanted. But as noted, expect the chip to die within 1.5-3 years. Normal expected lifetime is 10+ years.
Well mid October (12th) for splitting hairs. Anyway, on topic. I stand by my educated opinion that 1.5v is safe with good (below 60c) temps.
"Almost a year" is 10+ months for me, though I suppose if he has an ES...
~1.5v is a good setting for high end air cooling. It should get you to 4.6-4.9Ghz depending on your chip, and it should not kill your processor too prematurely. If you upgrade every 3-5 years I'm fairly positive that ~1.5v is safe for...
