No, just thumbed through the manual, the 3.5 is an audio out. Have you tried hooking up only the headphones or the speakers and not both at the same time?

I can't see the markings for the red/white audio ports from the pics, but I did see a mini jack on the side that might be a headphone out. If you use the minijack splitter you linked you can split that so that one goes to your headphones...

After some looking around, it seems that it's the same 19v from the psu but with a resistor in series. I found too many opinions on the size, some were 1k, others 200k or 390k. Don't know how attached you are to it to test different...

Do the POST lights turn on when it fails? The little red ones all over the motherboard? If they stop and stay at a certain point that will point to the problem, or does it not even get that far?

I like the snow edition, looks good with the white. I'm not sure how ”HD” those ports are on the raidmax are, but I wouldn't get it for that reason only. An add on sound card later on might be the route you go if you are looking for...
