Yep, don't use the OS overclocking. Someone needs to tell Asus that they don't need overclocking from OS, but good monitoring tool with functionality according to temps (like fan control, alarm, auto shutdown)
Socket wise, AMD is a better choice since Steamroller will be AM3+. Performance wise, Haswell, it's also new socket but there's not much info about incoming 1150 socket cpus. One thing is clear that you'll be bored with a non-OC chips....

850 is the max number on the AMD's own Catalyst overdrive right. Some cards need more voltage to go faster than 850. Some cards doesn't need any voltage for 900. Remember every chip is different. You'll need a new PSU as well. Can you...

Yeah lower the overclock. See if it goes up or stays the same. If it doesn't go up, lower it until it's worse than 940 and stay there. There's a chance the CPU can't keep up with high overclock.
