What link speed do you get under your Adapter?
Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Wireless Network Adapter > Link Rate / Speed.
May be propagating at a lower speed.

I'd also recommend Intel. Usually the easiest to get for compatibility.
Ended up getting some Intel PCI Gigabit ones from eBay for under 10 bucks a piece. Haven't tested them but those should be fine.
I think it is due to the fact they are moving to the VDSL instead of ADSL which is what the standard DSL Modems provide.
Now they do allow your own modems for DSL I believe but remember you need a "VDSL" modem instead of a standard ADSL...
Network+ is also an option, but that really depends if companies considering non-vendor specific exams.
Otherwise CCENT/ CCNA seems like a good option.
