use a torrent program, kind of a pain to install yeah... but it will download it in small chunks that all will use either md5 hash checksum or sha1 and thats on like little 2mb pieces so it wont toss the whole thing if one fails a lot...

sounds like you did the cd install cd install of debian/stable is ok... BUT the real fun is when you do a ground up install of testing or unstable staying away from experimental is ok, but running as a desktop i highly suggest at least...

what exact reason do you want to install it for? backtrack isnt a typical linux distro ya just install on another partition to get some linux goodness flowing in from the sounds of it, you arent very experienced with linux let alone...
debian testing? from the sounds of it, you might prefer it once you take a few minutes to stream line the install process with some scripts

debian stability is nice, and i find the internals nice and simplistic... however i really havent given the redhat family an honest try for awhile... i dont like yum so much, but as far as system utilities and advanced systems...
