Ok, heres a trick Ive used many times with excellent results, place the drive in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours, when you get it out connect it and immediately start copying the needed data, itll work for a while...

I have a PC vacuum made for cleaning out PC's that never caused me any problems, but usually its easier to just grab my air compressor and blow it out, so thats usually what i do. I wouldnt worry much about it unless its not working...
